affects the limbs of the body.  Soon I graduated from
simple soft ankle braces to full blown Custom AFO
braces.  This picture is of my 4th pair playing
volleyball with a friend at church.  I'm also wearing a
wrist brace from a volleyball injury.  It took 4 pairs of
AFO brace styles to find the one that would allow
me the flexibility to continue my passion of
volleyball.  They actually built my 4th pair into a pair
of shoes to keep the AFO braces from coming out of
my shoe when I move quickly.
I don't really know what my future holds in terms of
my disabilities, but I'm not going to give them
anymore power that would keep me from doing what
I enjoy which is volleyball and working with kids.  I
hope to soon get my certification in Peer Support so
that I can help kids who's shoes I've been in because
I am a survivor of several suicide attempts and
bullying and I know how much it would of meant to
me to have someone other than a therapist to talk to
and show me that things do eventually get better it
just takes time and for me its taken about a decade
and a half with the help of friends and family to
realize how much better things are, but that's okay
because the important thing is that things have
gotten better for me.  I've learned how to cope with my
challenges, how to ask for what I need to be
successful, and advocate for myself when I feel that I
have been treated unfairly due to my phycial disability
or mental illness.  I know for a fact for now things still
look very bright for my future even with having both
mental illness and a physical disability.

Advocate for people with
disabilities and be successful
Hi, my name is Jordan, and I grew up in Burleson,
TX.  My childhood was troubled with mental illness
ever since I was diagnosed with ADHD in 1st grade.
I was constantly bullied after I started middle school,
because my classmates thought I looked like a girl
since I had developed breasts, didn't have a huge
interest in girls, and had learning difficulties.  I felt
depressed and anxious throughout my school age.

By the time I was a senior in high school I also
started having issues with my balance and my
ankles rolling on me.  I ended up being referred to
UTSW Neurology Clinic in Dallas, TX where I
underwent extensive testing.  The doctor discovered
I had 6 lbs of pure breast tissue on my chest and
removed them 20 days after I walked the stage and
got my High School diploma.
